Half of a yellow sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie – Book review by Mayfred Appiah
This book was an amazing read. I greatly enjoyed reading it. The second part was grippingly painful to read, which is not because it lacked in any way, rather because it was painful to read about the war knowing it is something that occurred and inspired from real experiences. I was pulled out of my safety net and reminded that this is not pure fiction or a thing of the past, but people are still going through such experiences in different parts of the world.
The story flowed immaculately, and the different character stories were so well intertwined and narrated. The many facets and flaws of the characters made the story extremely captivating. They were simply alive and felt.
Chimamanda says in “In the shadow of Biafra” that when writing she hoped the empathetic human quality would be a recognisable trait in the book and she definitely succeeded because something that kept popping up to me was ” how raw, humane and human” the characters are.
